#PaintTipTuesday [014] The Meaning of Colors

Featuring our last #PaintTipTuesday of the month of March, we’ll leave our readers with a touch of purple — the color of royalty, luxury, wealth, and sophistication. Purple can also relate to romanance and as well as femininity.

Meaning: “Purple in its darkest values (eggplant, for example) is rich, dramatic, and sophisticated. It is associated with luxury as well as creativity, and as an accent or secondary color, it gives a scheme depth. Lighter versions of purple, such as lavender and lilac, bring the same restful quality to bedrooms as blue does, but without the risk of feeling chilly.” –Freshome.com

Where to use it: As there are so many variations of purple (as there is of every color!), each shade can depict a different tone and mood. So choosing where what shade to paint where can be totally dependent on personality. A pop of the color purple can go well in any room. Those looking for a more bold statement should stick with deeper purples while those looking for a light and whimsicle feel can seek out a lighter shade of the color.

We’ve chosen some of our favorites, but click each photo to check out our entire album dedicated to purple on Pinterest.

Pinterest Inspiration

Despite living and loving New England with all our hearts, sometimes we just have to say enough is enough! Instead of all this white, we’re looking forward to all the beautiful sounds, smells, and colors of the Spring!

Meant for rebirth and renewable, the Spring is the perfect season to refresh your cozy home. So, open the windows, let the breeze flow through, and pack away all those warm, Winter sweaters . . .

Okay, that might be wishful thinking for now, but we can start with some indoor paint projects by injecting a little Spring onto our walls, furniture, and fabrics!

What are your favorite Spring color combinations?

#PaintTipWednesday [008]

Ever wonder how the professionals get the streaky, but artsy look while painting walls? It’s a technique called dragging – and although the name makes it sound quite easy, there’s some special work that needs to be done to acheive a well painted “dragged” wall.

What we’ll need for our project: tut_dragging

1. Walls in good painting condition!
2. A quick hand! Must paint fast.
3. Paint tray
4. Rags
5. Water
6. Benjamin Moore / California Paint latex glaze
7. Benjamin Moore / California Paint eggshell sheen
8. 2″ and 4″ china bristle brushes + Paint Pad

Now, to the fun stuff . . .

Once the walls are prepared for painting (primed, dried, and base coat applied – let dry again). You’ll mix the glaze with two parts waters to one part glaze for the perfect ratio.

You’re going to moisten the paint pad with water before dipping it into the paint mixture – make sure you don’t put toooo much onto the pad as it can cause unblanced streaking. Start from top and apply the paint in one long, continuous vertical stroke.paint-fabric-x

As soon as you finish your stroke with the paint pad, take a DRY paint brush and run it through the mixture, using only the smaller brush for hard to reach spots. Make sure you remove the paint from the paint brush after every stroke to keep it dry for the entire project.

Apply the next paint pad stroke and repeat with the dry paint brush until the wall is finished. Overlapping the paint pad strokes will give the wall a continuous and professional look.

For a crisscrossed look, use the same steps to apply the effect horizontally.

Will you stick to your New Years Resolutions this year?

Every New Year we resolve to take better care of our bodies, our mental health, and our homes amongst other things. While we may need to make our number one resolution ~ Keep 2015’s NYE Resolution’s ~ we’ve also added to our list the following:

1) Keep 2015’s NYE Resolution’s
2) Organize each room + KEEP it organized always
3) Cross off those design projects we keep saying we’ll do
4) Travel more + let those travels inspire how we view our lives (and maybe our homes!)
5) Donate things we don’t need / use any longer ~ it could make somebody else’s life better rather than sitting on your shelf in a closet.
